A brief history of Jamaican Patties
We can guess the place of origin of these patties just from their name. Although they don’t look quite like your classic beef or plant-based round burger patties, they are still called patties. And that is perfectly fine. The Jamaican patty is rather a “turnover” consisting of a dough traditionally filled with ground meat and in this case plant-based mince or grounds. Originally, Jamaican patties were brought to the States in the 1960s and 1970s by the Jamaican migrants. They quickly became the favorite snacks and foods for many across the US and Canada and now with the proliferation of plant-based foods, vegan versions of Jamaican patties are gaining popularity across Europe as well.
In October of last year, Beyond Meat company recognized the potential in these patties and partnered up with the Caribbean restaurant “Golden Crust” to launch vegan Jamaican patties across the East Coast of the US and Canada.
Popularity of Jamaican Patties is growing
Another noteworthy company is Choose Life Foods. They are making fabulous vegan Jamaican patties worth tasting. You can visit their website for more info. We hope that these patties will soon find their way down to the West Coast and kitchens of California. We are looking forward to it.
More and more vegans are making these patties at home and loving them. Plant-based mince is now widely available and baking these patties at home can be very fun.
